Canada

Week 8 - May 25th to May 31st 1998

May 25th I went to la Musee Canadien des Civilisations (Canadian Museum of Civilisation) today. It is in the Quebecois town of Hull, across the Ottawa River from Ottawa. It is well worth visiting, but if you walk there from Ottawa, use the Alexandra Bridge as distance is less and the views are better than from the Portage Bridge over Victoria Island.
English speakers beware - outside the museum, and generally around this area, you can find some of the most ardent anti-english francophones, some of whom I found working in the shop at the Mariott Hotel on Rue Laurier, and were more than stand-offish; they were almost as offensively rude as your average Parisian.

All that aside, the museum is well worth a look. Its architecture is quite something - It fits somewhere between ugly and beautiful, but can never be described as plain. I think the word brave could be used. I recommend (if weather permits) walking around the building before entering.
Once within, the main (Grand) Hall is astounding - it has to be huge as it is lined with towering totem poles. The History Hall upstairs is interesting, and amazed me when I walked through a doorway and thought I was on a (historically reconstructed) street outside.

The evenings debauchery started (as always) at the Elephant and Castle (buy some shares!), moved on to the newly opened Illusion club (I'm not sure that they should use the go-go dancers as a selling point), and finished at the Firestation.

May 26th I'm not sure what happened today - I didn't keep notes, other than Linda came over for lunch, and didn't set off any smoke detectors or start any fires.
Mercredi,
Mai 27th
Ce matin, je vais en Quebec City. J'ai parle mon francais quel sont tres crap. Apres un petit numero des heures, je trouve mon brain est hurting.
The view from the train between Ottawa and Montreal was mostly boring, although viewing the remnants of the damage caused by the storms a few months ago was surprising - smashed telephone poles and cables all over the place - I guess the trunking has been replaced with safer underground works.
Jeudi,
Mai 28th
Je me souviens ! What did I forget...
Vendredi,
Mai 29th
Still feeling a bit blasted after yesterday, so I cut short my 2 day stay in Montreal to 2 hours, carrying on to Ottawa. The Basilica next to the station in Montreal is very pretty.
May 30th This is getting too tricky to keep up to date, so I'm just going to keep an itinerary of my travels from now on.
